The brill (Scophthalmus rhombus) is a flatfish fish of the turbot-like family (Scophthalmidae), which is found in the northeast and east of the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean.
The brill can grow up to 75 centimeters long and 8000 grams. The highest recorded age is 6 years. The fish has a disc shape, but is slightly less angular and longer than the turbot. Unlike the turbot, the brill has smooth skin. The fish becomes relatively thicker as the size increases.
The brill is a saltwater fish found in temperate waters. The depth at which the species occurs is 5 to 50 meters. The brill often lingers along the edges of deep channels.
The fish's diet consists mainly of fish, especially sandeel. He can camouflage himself very well, because he can perfectly match his color and pattern to the local seabed. The prey swimming past is then out-ambushed.
